How to Ask Polite Questions in English

There are three types of questions in English: direct, indirect, and question tags. Direct and indirect questions are used to ask for information you do not know, while question tags  are generally used to clarify or confirm the information you think you know. Each of these three question types  can be used politely, but certain indirect forms are more formal and polite than other types of questions. One form to avoid when asking for things is the imperative form. Saying Give me that (imperative) instead of Could you give me that (indirect) puts you at risk of sounding rude. Asking Direct Questions Direct questions are either yes/no questions such as Are you married?  or information questions such as Where do you live? Direct questions ask for information immediately without including  extra language such as I wonder or Can you tell me. Construction Direct questions place the helping verb before the subject of the question:   (Question word) Helping Verb Subject Verb Objects ? Where do you work?Are they coming to the party?How long has she worked for this company?What are you doing here? Making Direct Questions Polite Direct questions can seem abrupt or even impolite at times, especially when asked by a stranger. For example, if you come up to someone and ask: Does the tram stop here?What time is it?Can you move?Are you sad? There is nothing wrong with asking questions in this manner, but to sound more polite, its very common to add excuse me or pardon me at the beginning of a question. For example: Excuse me, when does the bus leave?Excuse me, what time is it?Pardon me, which form do I need?Pardon me, may I sit here? Key Words That Make Direct Questions More Polite In informal situations, one could use the word can in a direct sentence. In the United States, can is considered to be incorrect for written English in particular because, in the past, it was not a word used when asking for something. Saying May I have instead of Can I have is preferred in the U.S. In the United Kingdom, the word is not frowned upon. Cambridge University publishes English teaching materials with the phrase Can you lend me, Can I have, etc. In both countries, questions with can are made more polite by using could: Excuse me, could you help me pick this up?Pardon me, could you help me?Pardon me, could you give me a hand?Could you  explain this to me? Would can also be used to make questions more polite: Would you lend me a hand with the wash?Would you mind if I sat here?Would you let me borrow your pencil?Would you like something to eat? Another way of making direct questions more polite is to add please at the end of the question. Please should not appear at the beginning of the question: Could you fill in this form, please?Could you help me, please?Can I have more soup, please? May is used as a formal means to ask for permission and is very polite. It is usually used with I, and sometimes we. May I come in, please?May I use the telephone?May we help you this evening?May we make a suggestion? Asking Indirect Questions to Be Especially Polite Using indirect question forms is especially polite. Indirect questions request the same information as direct questions, but they are considered more formal. Notice that  indirect questions  begin with a phrase (I wonder, Do you think, Would you mind, etc.). Construction Indirect questions always begin with an introductory phrase and unlike direct questions, they do not invert the subject. To form an indirect question,  use an introductory phrase followed by question words for information questions, and if or whether for yes/no questions. NOTE: If you are asking a yes-no question, use if to connect the introductory phrase with the actual question statement. Depending on the intonation of the voice, they are used to verify information that we think is correct or to ask for more information. If the voice goes up at the end of the sentence, the person is asking for more information. If the voice drops, someone is confirming information that is known. Construction We can understand question tags as having two parts separated by a comma. The first part uses the subject followed by a helping verb as used in direct questions (Has she). Were moving again. I live with my mom she constantly has a new boyfriend or husband. At least this summer will give me a chance to get to know people before school starts, I think as I move boxes into the new house. As im unpacking, I notice this boy walking across the lawn next door hes good looking so obviously im going to pay attention. There are mainly two types of service providers- Locally Hosted Servers and Cloud Hosted Servers. Many companies are opting for this cloud services in order to get their work done and work more effectively. Among the cloud services, it is further divided into three types that are PaaS, SaaS and IaaS (Arora, Parashar Transforming, 2013). These three services are totally different from each other and their functions are also different and used for different purposes in an organization. The following report discusses about the cloud services and different types cloud services that are used by different organizations for different purposes. Difference between Locally Hosted Servers and Cloud Hosted Servers Cloud Hosting Servers are referred to the servers which are hosted by some third partys infrastructure often in aNOC whereas on the other hand Locally Hosted Servers are often referred where the digital signage server is hosted on the local area network. Among these two, there are certain differences. First is the Security and for this Locally Hosted Servers are considered the best as with this, the data remains safe within the infrastructure only and also the company can view who can see these data whereas on the Cloud Hosted Servers, it is managed by some third party infrastructure so the data is not that safe as in this the company has got no level of control over the data that was present in Locally hosted servers (Rittinghouse Ransome, 2016). Second is the For improved Accessibility services, Cloud Based servers are superior over the locally hosted servers as with Cloud based services, it helps in enhancing and also greatly improves the ability to reach out the data (Ryan, 2013). It is very much useful when it requires collaboration or situations which make it easy for the people to search for the data which is missing in locally based servers as it is compact within an organization (Kavis, 2014). Another big difference comes when it comes to Cost which is relatively less for the Cloud Based services rather than locally based services as with the Cloud Based Service, the company only need to contact the service providers rather than installing fully within the company which would cost even more (Sadiku, Musa Momoh, 2014). Another advantage is that with Cloud Based technology, no update is required on the part of the organization as everything is managed by the service providers whereas with locally based services, the company need to install the whole system within their infrastructure and need to revise the update whatever comes (Hashizume et al., 2013). Critical Issues and factors considered by SoftArc while moving to Web Infrastructure There are various factors that SoftArc should consider while choosing IaaS as their cloud service providers. The first and foremost thing that should be kept in consideration is Location as latency is an important factor when it comes to deal with customer satisfaction so it is very important for the company to choose a provider that a data center close to the customers so as to reduce the latency (Kavis, 2014). Another thing that should be kept in consideration is the API as choosing an infrastructure with strong API will help the company to treat the whole infrastructure as code that will allow the company to control every aspect of the cloud (Hashem et al., 2015). The next thing that should be kept in mind is the Auto-Scaling as with this the company sites will have less fluctuation in tariff. It also helps in maintaining the load balance. It should also analyze and monitor the system for any incoming traffic (Hashizume et al., 2013). And finally built-in systems should be defined where it can be possible to launch or remove additional servers. Another important aspect is the Architecture as this is very necessary as there will be communication among different servers and the traffic or packets that are travelling should be kept secure. Difference between SaaS, PaaS and IaaS IaaS is comprised of automated and scalable computer resources provided with cloud storage and network capability which can be self provisioned and is available on demand. IaaS providers offer these services via API with the help of associated resources. These clients have direct access to these servers and storage (Hashem et al., 2015). Users who are in touch with IaaS can build a separate virtual data center within the cloud. IaaS provides the most flexible cloud computing features which include the automated deployment of servers, processing power, storage and networking (Almorsy, Grundy Mller, 2016). The users have full control over the infrastructure which is not included in PaaS or SaaS. The main purpose of IaaS is that it is used for the actual deployment of PaaS, SaaS and web scale applications. SaaS is very similar to the old thin client model of software where the web browsers provide the access to the servers which are running on servers. SaaS is the most common form of cloud services that are available to the consumers (Erl, Cope Naserpour, 2015). It moves all the managing software and its deployment to some other third part services. SaaS is intended to reduce the cost of software by cutting all the technical staff that includes installation, managing and upgrading of the software also it reduces the cost of licensing software (Arora, Parashar Transforming, 2013). SaaS is mainly used for the Customer Relationship Management applications Google Apps, Dropbox and Box. Functioning of PaaS is quite less than SaaS and is mainly used for the software development and deployment. PaaS providers mainly deal with the server side and provide the clients an environment where OS and server software and the network infrastructure are taken into consideration. PaaS helps in virtualization technology and helps in scaling the demand as it grows (Dinh et al., 2013). Examples of PaaS are Heroki, Red Hats OpenShift and Google App Engine. Cloud Service used by SharePoint The most appropriate cloud services that can be used by SharePoint can be both SaaS and PaaS. SharePoint is itself a web based application and SaaS can give access to the web browsers that are running on servers. SaaS helps in managing the software and its deployment over the third party services (Erl, Cope Naserpour, 2015). SaaS also helps in reducing the cost of licensing any software. With the help of SaaS, web services can be managed easily and more securely as it is fully dedicated to make the web experience more smooth and easy to use (Almorsy, Grundy Mller, 2016). On the other hand PaaS could provide the flexibility that would allow the developers to develop applications on the SharePoint platforms which is not possible while using SaaS. Problems with the services and how to deal with them SaaS: SoftArc could face the possible problems while using SaaS. The first is that users need to get connected with the internet all the time. There is no option to work offline if the company is using SaaS. Getting internet connection is not a big deal nowadays but the companies need to be assured that the service providers from whom they are getting SaaS are providing the high speed internet in order to work (Arora, Parashar Transforming, 2013). The second come the Data Security as with cloud based technology; the data is visible to all and is not that safe as it used to be. This could mean a possible threat to the data and hackers could steal these data. To avoid this, it is better for the company to ask their service providers that they will keep their data safe (Almorsy, Grundy Mller, 2016). The third is the Data Control as many companies have got no idea how the service providers will keep their data safe. To avoid this from happening, companies should do a thorough research on these service providers. The last is the data collection which can help the company to choose their service providers where their customers are near and this will help the companies to stay close to their users and this will minimize the latency. PaaS: PaaS is very important for its ability to learn more quickly which helps the developers to develop any applications to test and run them before the final release. PaaS also ensures the businesses can leverage their data more accurately by providing them with a toolkit which helps them in creating their applications (Arora, Parashar Transforming, 2013). Conclusion From the above discussion it can concluded that cloud services have become an integral part of any organization as they help the organization to grow and work more effectively. There are some limitations also using these services and the company should keep this in mind before installing them to their company. These individuals thus illustrate how sharp the character of Olivier was. Furthermore, Hamlet’s uncle tells them to accompany him during the diplomatic mission in order to ascertain that the King accomplishes his evil plans for Hamlet. Their loyalty to the King outweighs their relationship and attachment to Olivier. Guildenstern’s and Rosencrantz’ flimsy relationship with Olivier contrasted to this Prince’s disregard for tradition when it mattered. Fortinbras was a crucial part of the play because he developed a contrast for Hamlet’s characte r. Fortinbras was interested in conquering Denmark because he wanted to avenge his father’s death (Shakespeare 5. 2. 23). He was swift and firm with his decisions. Conclusion The 1948 film is a depiction of how film can limit certain components of an older play. Shakespeare intended to create an all-rounded main character in his 1600 play, and one sees this through the characters that surrounded Hamlet. Olivier eliminated some of these characters and thus presented a weaker main character than Shakespeare’s. Biological Influences Essay Example Biological Influences Paper Biological Influences Paper Of the four experiments that I conducted were presented, I decided to conduct experiments 1, 2 and 4. In experiment 1, I would rate the coarseness of the sandpaper as 7 (very coarse) but after the second time that I rubbed it, my fingers felt as if they were already numb from the coarseness of the sandpaper. In experiment 2, the taste of the fresh water surprised me because it tasted a little sweet, just like the taste of the cup with sugar on it. I tasted the freshwater a couple of times more and it tasted â€Å"normal† after five drinking. In the last experiment, the thought of submerging my hands into a hot bowl of water was actually scary so it took a few encouragements to do it. When I dipped my hands in the two bowls, I could not almost feel the cold water because my mind was preoccupied with the hot water. When the 3 minutes was over, I quickly dipped both hands into the bowl with lukewarm water and interestingly enough, both felt warm. It was if heat was disseminated all throughout the middle bowl. Both hands had a neutral lukewarm feeling. In all the three experiments, adaptation was observed and based from the observations that were gathered form the experiment, adaptation is an innate human ability to cope with the changes in his environment which is triggered by some stimuli. There are actually two types of adaptation in this case. The first one is the sensory adaptation. This kind of adaptation was observed in the first two experiments. Sensory adaptation is most likely felt by our senses- nose, ears, skin, etc. after our receptors has recovered from fatigue (Sensory adaptation, 2001). In the experiments where sensory adaptation occurred, the stimuli were capture/felt by our senses- namely sense of touch and taste. I first â€Å"conditioned† my senses and by doing such, I was able to â€Å"trick† my senses of sensations- whereas, causing them fatigue- when I was about to introduce them to a different stimulus, the after effect was still there. This means to say that the sensations that my receptors were able to gather is stuck in my brain and it still being processed. That is why, when I introduced a new stimulus, it took a little while before my nerves were able to adapt to the new sensations/stimulus. On the other hand, perceptual adaptation was observed in the last experiment that I conducted. Unlike sensory adaptation, perceptual adaptation is only perceived in our mind. It is us who sends a message to the brain if before the stimulus affects us. Hence, perceptual adaptation does not travel through our receptors and nerves but it is directly processed in our brain by external stimuli. (Steen, 2005) Both kinds of adaptations are stimulated by a stimulus and undergo a pathway- it just happened that their pathway is different. In perceptual adaptation, our senses are indirectly responsible for the sensations that our brain is processing whereas in sensory adaptation, sensations travel through our nerves and receptors before our brain processes it. Since there was no direct sensory system on which perceptual adaptation may travel, the brain therefore is the one responsible for it. It directly processes the information even before it can react to an external stimulus. The most prominent system that is involved is the reticular system by which it directs the focus of our attention somewhere else.

Phonemic awareness Essay

Phonemic awareness has been defined as the ability to deal unequivocally and segmentally with sound units which are smaller than the syllable. Phonemes are the tiniest elements that make up the spoken language. Phonemic awareness thus is the ability that enables an individual to focus on and manipulate these phonemes in spoken language (National Reading Panel (NRP), 2010). It has been established that the term phonemic awareness became popular in 1990s when researchers were attempting to study the development of early literacy and reading disability. Having been defined as the ability of the language learner to manipulate the sounds of spoken words, phonemic awareness plays a crucial role in language development in children. This paper will explore the impacts of phonemic awareness on the child’s early development of reading and spelling skills. Phonemic skills: More often than not, the term phonemic awareness has been used interchangeably with phonological awareness. However, the two terms are very distinct considering that phonemic awareness concentrates on the phonemes which are the smallest units that make up the speech whereas phonological awareness focuses on both the small and the larger units as well including the syllables, onsets, and rhymes. A child who possesses the phonemic awareness skills will be able to segment sounds in words for instance, they are able to recognize and identify a word from the separate sounds in the word (International Reading Organization, 1998). Phonemic awareness can therefore be said to be the only aspect of reading that is highly crucial in children before they can start to learn reading. Phonemic awareness is therefore a pre-requisite for development of reading in children (Brummitt, 2007). Impacts of Phonemic Awareness: Phonemic awareness has great impacts on a child’s early development of reading and spelling skills. Phonemic skill like segmentation of words is very crucial in determining how the child will be able to master spoken language. The amount of sound information that children can handle at a time will determine the ability of the children to learn the phonological skills in language. Studies have shown that phonemically aware children are more capable of reading words in prose with minimum mistakes than those who are phonemically unaware. Children are known to learn the spelling skills in two ways which includes internalization of the orthographic patterns of written words through imitation, and by synthesizing their understanding of letters and letter clusters with how the word is said in an analogy process. Learning to spell unfamiliar words either by imitation or analogy with familiar words is usually â€Å"influenced by Knowledge of letter-sound mappings, the amount of complexity of orthographic information the kids can process, and their knowledge of word structures† (Munro, 2010, para 27). Definitely, there is a relationship between the awareness of sound segmentation in words and learning how to spell using the two techniques described above (Munro, 2010). Conclusion: Phonemic awareness is a very essential aspect of language development in children during their development stages.  Phonemic awareness can be responsible for positive development in IQ, vocabulary, listening, comprehension, and how well kids can learn to read, write, and spell. The children should also be able to express what is in their mind by the aid of phonemic awareness even when they had never seen the printed version of the word before. It is evident that by teaching the children how to manipulate the sounds in language improves their reading capabilities. Founding Fathers Essay In the past century, there has been a growing debate as to the motives of the founders of the republic and as a result the nature of our constitution. While Marxist analysts such as Charles Beard contended that the founders were wealthy elite that ultimately created a conservative document intended to weaken the poor popular majority, other scholars like John Roche believed that the fathers had no such agenda and they were working purely to reconcile states’ interests. Pluralists, such as Hofstadter, believed that the constitutional insistence of checks and balances intended to create a slow political process in which no interest can completely win and oppress other interests over a long period of time. While the scholars, Beard and Roche, make a strong defense of their opposing argument, it appears, based on the constitutional document and historical analysis that Hofstadter provided a more accurate portrayal of the founding fathers and their purpose in framing the various pieces of the Constitution. The men who wrote the constitution came from a particular background of wealthy and politically elite people and as a result one of their main concerns in the newly developing nation was the protection of their property. Under the Articles of Confederation, there was no guaranteed right of property and the economy was becoming a mess as there was no power to keep it controlled. Charles Beard states in his document, â€Å"They were anxious above everything else to safeguard the rights of private property against any leveling tendencies on the part of the propertyless masses.† In a country where the majority rules, the wealthy few became vulnerable to possibility of the poor population taking their belongings. Beard believes evidence of this can be seen throughout the Constitution, such as the Contract and Commerce clause which both limit state powers and allow Congress to regulate trading and property rights. The second piece of evidence is that certain branches of the government, the Senate, President, and Supreme Court, are not directly elected by the people. John P. Roche suggests that the framing of the Constitution was essentially a democratic process involving the unification of the state, political, and  economic interests of the nation. Roche recognizes that the framers were an elite, but he is careful to point out that they were a political elite dedicated for the most part to creating an efficient and at the same time controlled national government that would be able to overcome the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. The framers were not an organized few dedicated to particular notions of political or economic beliefs beyond the need to create a national government that would be capable of uniting the disparate interests of the state. When the Constitutionalists decided to challenge the Confederation, they used the methods of political legitimacy. The 3/5 compromise allowed more representation of the lower population in the house of representatives and the bill of rights was formed in order to ensure state rights and c heck the central government. Roche believes the bicameral legislation of the constitution was effective at producing pluralism. Finally, the last theory of what the founding fathers intended for the purpose of the Constitution to be was to create a balanced government that followed the philosophy of checks and balance which derived from the Enlightenment ideals of Montesquieu. In â€Å"The Founding Fathers: An Age of Realism,† Hofstadter argues that the agenda of the founding fathers was not only to ensure the rights of property for the wealthy elite, but also for the poorer masses. â€Å"Most of them would probably have admitted that the rich, unrestrained, would also plunder the poor.† The purpose of the Constitution was to create a government that allowed both the elite and individuals to maintain their rights and opportunities in the nation. The framing made sure to include legislation that aided the wealthy but also pieces that helped represent the larger population. The contract and commerce clauses protected property rights and strengthened the central government, but then the Bill of Rights and the House of Representatives gave power to the states and the poor majority. In addition, while the President can veto bills, Congress has the chance to override the veto with a 2/3 majority. The Senate, representing states, and the House of Representatives provide involvement for the majority in the Constitution, while the President and Supreme Court are chosen by the minority and provide protection for the smaller group of individuals. The founding fathers made  sure to include checks and balances when they developed the Constitution in order to ensure a fair government where one group does not hold the most power. Both Beard and Roche have contrasting views on what the purpose was of the founding fathers in their framing of the Constitution, but both are ultimately flawed as it is wrong to say that their agenda was limited to selfish greed or altruism for the majority. The real agenda, as Hofstadter explains, was to form a balanced government that ensures the basic rights for both the majority and minority, allowing the wealthy and the poor to be represented and protected under the branches of the government and legislation through a system of checks and balances.

The article gives both an overview of the life of Vinnie Ream and an account of the political battles that arose from her commissions.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The article opens by talking about how the government had decided to commemorate Civil War hero David Farragut with a statue. While many people expected congress to choose well-known sculptor Horatio Stone for the work, they instead picked a 26-year old woman who had only done one large statue in her life. This episode is used to illustrate how Vinnie Ream caused a great deal of controversy, with a strong split between supporters and detractors.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  There is a brief recounting of her childhood leading up to her interest in sculpting, influenced by an artist named Clark Mills, who encouraged and taught Ream. PENETRATION RATE OF MAIN PLAYERS IN B&R MARKET In 2011, the whole B&R market penetration sunk into a sap situation, the penetration of the whole market by itself dropped from 43. 5to 41. 6(%). The penetration rate of P&G in year 2011 decreased by 8. 3% compared with that in 2010, and continued a downside trend by the first quarter of 2012 by 7. 5%. G2 also did well in 2011, making an increase of 35 penetration points both in male system and male system blades.Moreover, despite the penetration decrease in male system and male system blades, MACH 3 made an increase of 5 and 33 in penetration points in male razors and disposables respectively. In contrast, FUSION series were all losing power to attract new customers, substantially, FUSION MANUAL dropped 32 penetration points in male system , 27 in male sys blades , and 14 in male razors, what’s worse than that, FUSION POWER lost nearly 40 points in male system, 34 in male sys blades and almost 69 in male razors. A Different History – Essay

Commentary – A Different History (by Sujata Bhatt) ‘A different history’ by Sujata Bhatt is a poem written about the social and political concern of the lost of cultural identical renouciation of Indian identity. The poet has used sentence pattern, motifs, symbolisms and imagery predominantly in this poem to emphasize the problem of younger generations losing their roots and identities. The poem begins with the use of the motif â€Å"Great Pan† who is the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music, and companion of the nymphs. Great Pan† in the poem is a symbolism of the native culture and identity in the European countries. This motif plays a huge role in the poem as the first three lines in the first stanza shows us the richness of Indian culture and the need for all Indians to appreciate their culture. The great pan leaving Europe to India portrays the intensity loss in Europe but more important highli ghts the attraction of the land, rich, harmony between environment and human society coexisting that India can offer. The human nature and human wisdom is what attracts even the god of culture to leave Europe and â€Å"emigrated to India†.The poet highlights through this use of personification that every Indian should be proud of the great culture root that Indian can provide. The sentence patterns along with other techniques used by the poet are significant in terms of the allowing the readers to understand the theme and the concerns of the poet. The run on lines in the first stanza implies that Indian culture will never fade or end and that it will be eternal, passing on through generations and generations. It is also effective in the sense that the run on lines emphasizes the effectives of the repetitions used in the poem.The repetition of â€Å" It is a sin† ultimately shows the readers that it is a sin to discard the Indian culture and it is a sin to forget where one is from and what one should value culture-wise. The constant use of cultural icons such as â€Å"snakes†, â€Å"monkey† and â€Å"trees† further stresses the rich native culture in India and how important it is that conserve this culture. An imperative is also used in the poem â€Å" You must learn†¦wood the paper was made† gives off a cautious tone, warning the readers what would happen if the culture is not respected and treasured.The first stanza of the poem, although linked closely with each other have very contrasting moods. In the first stanza, the poet idolizes the uniqueness of Indian culture and how important it is to sustain this culture. The mood that the readers get is hopeful and respectful. However, in the second stanza, the reader uses many techniques, principally rhetorical questions to express her thoughts of the English colonization and the English language influences. The tone in the second stanza is bitterness and sad with a s ense of fear.The rhetorical questions â€Å"Which language has not been the oppressor’s tongue? † and â€Å" Which language truly meant to murder someone? † contradictory with each other. The first question implies that the English imposes foreign language on native Indians when they first conquered India. She explores the enigma whereby the language of the conqueror is cherished by later generations. â€Å"The unborn grandchildren grow to love that strange language†. The second question is a metaphor the poet had used to point out the neutrality of language.Language is not meant to murder anyone and is major component of history. She is merely confused why Indian people of today’s generation would love a language that came from people, which has caused death and agony for hundreds of years in India. It is ironic to see how young people today forget about their heritage to love the English language. The two stanzas link with each other to show the confusion of the poet not understanding how people could neglect their own rich culture (described in stanza one) to loving a language that has caused them so much pain in the past (stanza two)The pre-dominant imagery used in the second stanza is imagery of the English colonization. The use of the metaphor â€Å"after the torture, with†¦ of the conqueror’s face† contains many destructive diction that provokes a negative feeling for the readers but more importantly to build up to the irony. The fact that after all the people in India have gone through in the colonization by England, generations today would still love and speak English. The sense of pain and sorrow of the poet is undeniable.After the colonization of India, English was brought in as an official language and was referred to as the â€Å"strange language† that younger generations love. The loss of identity in younger generations is clear in the second stanza and younger people do not know the hi story of India and don’t seem to understand and appreciate the importance of this wonderful culture. The poem ‘ A different culture’ by Sujata Bhatt emphasizes the loss of identity for younger generations in India. The poet used a number of techniques effectively to show the sense of irony and bitterness towards this significant social issue in today’s society.
